Chromatic Scale

Chromatic Scale

You know about the Majors and the Minors and how they follow certain patterns of tones and semitones, but the chromatic scale is unique in that it is a series of one semitone after another.

There are no whole tones in a chromatic scale.

Essentially, if you had a piano in front of you, you would play every note one after the other, black and white notes both.

It is called "Chromatic" because it comes from the Greek term "Chroma" meaning colourful.

Watch the video below to see how a Chromatic Scale is played.

The Chromatic scale can start and end on any note, and it can ascend or descend, or even go in contrary motion when heard in more than one voice.

I'd like you to listen to Flight of the Bumblebee, which uses a very chromatic melody, moving mainly by semitone.
